Career in Sports Education

You love sports and are looking for a career in sports and physical education? If yes read on... now there is no need to be disheartened. Academics from some of India’s prominent universities running courses in sports and physical education say there are opportunities galore in this field, since health is a cause for increasing concern among the teeming millions of India.

Normally with Indians health has always been a matter of great concern. But now in this fast moving world health is taking a backseat as people don’t have time for themselves. This is the place where the need for a specialist physical instructor comes in. Nowadays, people are becoming health conscious and are joining gyms, yoga and aerobics classes to remain fit and specialists in these fields are much in demand.

Lots of Universities in India offer graduate level and master level degree courses in physical education which include Osmania University, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, and Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE), Gwalior, which is the only deemed university in Asia in this field. Calcutta, Bangalore and Kerala universities also have such degree and postgraduate courses.

Well for students living and wanting to pursue a course in sports and physical education in Delhi, they don’t have to feel disappointed; Delhi University in this academic session (2007-2008) has started a three-year degree course in this field. DU also plans to start a master’s course well before the first batch graduates. Over half a dozen colleges affiliated to the Delhi University have introduced course in sports and physical education. The Delhi University’s Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Education & Sports Sciences has been running since 1987.

The physical education course is divided in two parts – theory and application. The former deals with the science of physical education while the latter involves practical training in different sporting activities, fitness programmes, aerobics, gym operations, sports and event management and also sports journalism.
