Chandni Chowk

Chandni ChowkChandi Chowk is one of the oldest markets found in Delhi. It has its roots deep in history. When the famous Mughal emperor Shahjahan, who also built the Taj Mahal, shifted his capital to Delhi and built the majestic Red Fort, this market was created for favourite daughter, Jahanara. At that time, it comprised of a large square in the middle of which laid a pool. It is said that Chandni Chowk, literally meaning ‘Moon Square’ was named thus because on one moonlit night, both the square and pool lay shimmering and its beaty caught everyone’s eye. During Shahjahan’s time itself a market had been built in the shape of the half moon. Around this, in almost no time a plethora of shops had been built and roughly three and a half centuries later, this market is still standing.

Chandni Chowk is made up of an assortment of shops that sell dresses or books or electronic goods. It is one of the most crowded places in Delhi and every nook and corner of it is crammed with shops and vendors. It is also very famous for its eateries. The original Haldirams (a very famous Indian eatery) actually started here and is standing even today. This bazaar has something for everyone. Some people have even shopped for an entire wedding in this bazaar alone!

Chandi ChowkChandi ChowkPeople from all walks of life visit Chandni Chowk everyday so you can just imagine how jam-packed the place can be. It is advisable to go on foot in Chandni Chowk as the lanes are narrow and shops spill on to the roads everyday. Otherwise, once you’re tired you can take a rickshaw (a tricycle pulled by a person) into the narrow lanes. Prices in Chandni Chowk are not always fixed so bargaining can save you lots of money.

One must also beware on beggars and mendicants who will approach asking for alms. One must also keep a close watch on one’s wallet or purse as there are several pickpockets and thieves here.
