Commonwealth Games 2010

India and Delhi more so is eagerly awaiting the coming of Commonwealth Games 2010. Actually the wait has begun from the day (November 13, 2003) India won the bid to host the games. India's theme of "2010 - Great Games for Sure", which had the full financial backing of the Government, won 46 votes out of a possible 72 votes.

India, aiming to win the bid, had taken a strong support cast of the Indian Corporate Sector, superstars like the world 100 m champion Kim Collins, and Lord Sebastian Coe, India's little master Sunil Gavaskar, Anjali Bhagwat, Morad Ali Khan, and Michael Ferreira to Jamaica. In the end it all paid rich dividends.

The preparations to host the 2010 Games would begin straight away, save for a suitable period of recovery after the celebrations.

The plans for the preparations are already drawn. The first phase of the Delhi airport modernisation will be completed by March 2010, well before the Commonwealth Games, Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium is getting refurbished, so is Nehru Stadium Complex. The construction of a new indoor stadium, Talkatora Indoor Stadium, having a capacity of 15, 000, is underway; two out door stadiums, DDA Siri Fort Sports Complex and Siri Fort Auditorium, are built to provide a lasting legacy for the sport of Lawn Bowls.

The Games village, to be situated on the banks of river Yamuna in West Delhi, is planned to provide unique services and facilities like "athlete-comfort" orientation and approach. The Village promises to translate traditional Indian hospitality into standards of comfort & excellence never seen before.

Michael Fennell, the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) chairman, during his visit in June 2006, was so happy with the plan and progress that he said he ‘was much impressed by the intellectual freshness brought in' by Aiyar, the sports minister.
With a number of world class projects, including quality transportation, food, lodging, sightseeing, under way, the 2010 Games will provide a fantastic opportunity to promote the Commonwealth Games to a New Generation of fans

What a Mess of Common Wealth Games

Imagine Delhi being eradicated from all local businesses and people falling to reads.

That’s right. Welcome common wealth games. By the time they come plenty are sure to go out of business and well to do living.

Even if this is a right move, is the government helping them to procure another commercial area allotted by the right authorities?

Well there is more to see to this and I feel, commonwealth should not be welcomed until these issues are resolved. Not that I am against it but why finish your own country and invite the foreign delegates for a ho-hah games. Would you welcome the common wealth games with sour hearts?

Easy for those to comment not being effected. Think of those who lost their jobs, businesses, and a decent living.

Naveen
