Crime Rate Shoots up in NCR

Be it the case of the notorious maxi-killers of Gurgaon or the infamous Anant Gupta kidnapping at Noida, the NCR is rapidly turning into a haven for criminals with almost daily instances of chain snatchings, car thefts and robberies. Incidentally, this comes in the backdrop of there actually being a drop in the crime rate in Delhi. A major reason for this has been the heavy crackdown on gangs by Delhi Police during the past few years which has resulted in a majority of criminals moving out of the capital and setting up base in adjoining areas in the NCR.

And its not just crimes like robbery and murder that are on the rise but in the past one year there have been several instances of high-tech crimes like data theft and misuse of clients' personal information committed by educated people, usually the employees of these organizations.

This gives rise to the very important question of how equipped and trained are the Gurgaon and Noida Police to handle these highly skilled and specialized crimes? Sadly, not very equipped, which was the opinion of several officials in the police department itself, much to the worry of the residents. The Uttar Pradesh government has been accused by several police officials of having a feudal approach towards policing while the Gurgaon Police did not even have a traffic wing until last week, not to mention no anti-terrorist or bomb-disposal squads for which it is dependent on neighboring states, primarily Delhi.

Just to get an idea of how vulnerable the security in NCR is, the local Police Control Room number is inaccessible to mobile phones in Noida and Gurgaon and instead, when one dials 100, one gets connected to the Delhi Police control room. And even though UP does give preference to Noida there is a marked difference in police standards between Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. In fact in Noida nearly 50 per cent of the police force is involved in VIP and court duties.

When asked for a remedy to these problems, officials within the police department were of the view that there was an urgent need to introduce a commissionerate system in the two satellite towns on the lines of Delhi Police so that vital decisions could be taken immediately without any delays. Along with this there was also a pressing need to upgrade resources and manpower to deal with the highly skilled and specialized crimes being committed in these cities.
