With about 3,30,000 students, Delhi University or more popularly known as DU is one of the largest universities in the world, offering both undergraduate and post graduate courses in a variety of subjects. Established in 1922 as a unitary, teaching and residential university by an act of the then Central Legislative Assembly, DU has grown to become one of the premier educational institutes of the country. With more than 75 colleges offering a variety of professional and non professional courses, this prestigious university attracts students from all across the world. The Vice- President of India is the Chancellor and the Chief Justice of India is the Pro-Chancellor of DU. The university has 78 Colleges and Institutions and 84 Post-graduate Departments. There are more than 30 libraries located all cross the campuses which provide students and the general public the required study and research material. Some of these study materials can also be reached through the online library system.
The university currently has two main campuses – North and the South Campus and is in the process of developing the East and West Campuses. North Campus forms the main hub for Delhi University while South campus was established in 1973 near Dhaula Kuan based on the multi-campus concept. The East Campus is being developed with the University College of Medical Science as its nucleus, while the West Campus will have as its focus on Engineering and Technology.
For the benefit of out of station students, the University runs eleven hostels with a large number of rooms. These hostels are typically available for post-graduate and research students. Apart from this, several colleges also have their own hostel facilities.
Admission to DU can be either through a written test or through direct admission based on marks in the senior secondary studies. Written test is conducted for a group of subjects in order to test the candidate's aptitude, otherwise, candidates can apply to the colleges based on their senior secondary marks by filling out a common admissions form, specifying their choice of colleges which is then sent to the respective colleges for review. These colleges publish three successive lists of cut-off percentages, which are the levels of marks, at which the admissions in a particular course closed the previous year. These cut off lists are used by the students to get an idea of the marks needed to get into a course and college of desired choice. According to an estimate there are almost four candidates vying for every single seat at DU. New academic session for the university generally commences in mid July every year.
Further information for each of the colleges can be found out here
