East Delhi

Not long ago Delhi used to reside only on the west of river Yamuna. This was basically to make the intruders life difficult. When the frequency of invaders started to become thin, Delhi expanded to the east, mainly through the bridges. After Independence as Delhi became the hub of activates from political to business to trading to entertainment, the immigrants from all over India and world rushed and made East Delhi their home. The area thus also bears the name Trans-Yamuna and Jamna-Par.

With the coming of Asian Games in 1982, Indira Gandhi undertook the ambitious project to present the games a new indoor stadium. After the death of Indira Gandhi this stadium complex, one of the biggest in Asia, was named after her. For visitors a line of facilities is available at the complex: Food Plaza, a joint to munch fast food, multi cuisine, beverages; Business Center, a place to browse internet and post letters; Travel Assistance Counter to assist local and outstation sightseeing and a currency exchange counter, where you can convert currency to Indian Rupees.

With India winning to the bid to host 2010 Commonwealth Games, this complex is planned for another bout of refurbishment.

The recent pride of East Delhi is the 20-storey Scope Minar Complex at Lakshmi Nagar near Radhu Palace. Many reputed public sector units have relocated their offices here vacating centrally-located rented office buildings in other parts of the Capital.

Mayur Vihar is East Delhi's prestigious residential area. Surrounded by Noida on the South, Old Patparganj on the North, and River Yamuna on west, Mayur Vihar has a number of ancient temple structures.

Further up in the north is Brahmapuri - a business area of East Delhi. Manufacturers here produce glass beads, gem stones, beaded jewelry, Acrylic bangles. For traders in antique clocks and jewelry, Apollo Creations is a place never to be missed
