The Royal Netherlands Embassy is giving art lovers in Delhi a truly special gift with its plans to organize an exhibition of some of the choicest works of the world renowned Dutch artist – Rembrandt Harmenszoon Van Rijn. This exhibit is being held to commemorate Rembrandts 400th birth anniversary and will feature reproductions of his painting, drawings and etchings by the master himself. Apart from actually getting to see Rembrandt reproductions at the exhibition, there will also be lectures by well-known expert on the painter – Dr. Taco Dibbits, curator of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Dr. Dibbits will deliver three lectures on Rembrandt which will not just cover his painting techniques, but also shed light on the oriental influence in the Dutch masters’ paintings. Dr. Dibbits is a recognised expert in his field and was confident that his lectures and the exhibition would be well-received and successful since there were quite a considerable number of art lovers in India as well, most of whom happened to be admirers of Rembrandt’s work. And, in what may come as a surprise to even the most ardent of art lovers, there actually even exists a connection between Rembrandt and the Mughal king Shah Jahan, the man known for his obsession with symmetry. This is reflected in Rembrandt’s drawings of Indian miniatures of the Mughal emperors Jahangir and Shah Jahan, which he must have seen and collected at some time. In fact he collected quiet a few of these miniatures from across the world, as was discovered in an inventory of his possessions in 1656 which contained an album of curious miniatures as well as various wood and copper prints of all sorts of costumes. The Netherlands Ambassador was confident that the reproductions of Rembrandt's work would definitely strike a chord with the Indian audience since Rembrandt was not only of interest to art historians, but was also a source of inspiration for modern day painters. The exhibition will open in Delhi on December 16 at the National Museum and will subsequently move on to Vadodara. Start: 08:01

(all day)
