Extracurricular activities such as games, sports, dramatics, speeches and poetry recitation contests have been organized in educational institutions since a long time. The aim of these activities is to bring about an all-round development of the personality of the students which is basically the aim of education.
The proliferation of education and inclusion of numerous professional courses and streams have added a new dimension to the objectives of education. There is a need for the dissemination of information among the students about the latest professional and employment opportunities, the on-campus interviews and recruitment drives by various companies. The students would also like to know about the new schemes and courses launched by the university or they can also be interested in discussing day- to- day problems faced by them, for example, the security of the girl students, increase in university fees, examination reforms, internal assessment, law and order problems, the intrusion of outsiders in the campus, canteen and much more.
Earlier the students used to share their views through the college and university magazines or by holding public assemblies. A new addition to these forums is the introduction of FM radio on the campus of the Delhi University. It is a great forum for education, dissemination of information and also entertainment for the students. The DU FM, a community radio service is bringing about a silent revolution at the North Campus. It is being run under the guidance of the university faculty and facilitating the participation of maximum number of students to achieve its objective—the democratic dissemination of information.
FM radio functions from the campus of the School of Open Learning in a classroom kind of fashion but is much more focused. The operators comprise of students and teachers of the university.
Vijay Luxmi, production manager, DU FM, says, "We keep inviting the colleges to participate in our shows and the students are quite enthusiastic. They make their own scripts and we record them at our studio. Since we are also catering to the areas around the North Campus, we also raise issues affecting their lives."
"We have also had reviews of topical shows such as Awam ki Awaz and Kitabon ki Duniya. Though we have never promoted the channel, listeners are growing in number. They identify with the shows," adds Luxmi.
The programs are making forays into the class rooms in the north campus. A program was recently organized by the students of the Miranda House to discuss the problem of the security of girls in the city. "We had switched on the radio in the classroom and listened to the program for about 10 minutes. The students also sang a few songs in the show," informs Sangeet Rai, lecturer at Miranda House.
