It’s time for art lovers in the city to witness a rare style of painting – the Thangka paintings from Tibet – in a fortnight long Thangka exhibition being held in the city from January 30.

A Thangka PaintingA Thangka Painting

Thangka painting is a uniquely Tibetan tradition that evolved between the 7th and 12th centuries. Its origins lie in Indian religious art, but Nepalese, Chinese and Kashmiri styles have also influenced its development. Painted on canvas and mounted in silk brocade, a thangka is more than just a work of art and comes in a huge variety of styles, depicting various subjects.

A thangka may portray the Buddha or some other deity, or a concept in Tibetan cosmology, astrology or medicine. Thangka paintings requires extensive concentration, attention to detail, and knowledge of Buddhist philosophy, and hence, have to be carried out in a peaceful environment.  This is an opportunity for Delhiites to witness this rare art form.

The Venue: Tibet House, Lodhi Road Institutional Area, , New Delhi

The Date: 30th January – 15th February, 2007

The Timings: 10am – 5pm (On weekdays only)
