Rub in Punjabi means God. A rabbi is a man of God. For Jews, he is their spiritual leader. Remember Robert Browning’s poem, Rabbi ben Ezra?
We have our own rabbi in Delhi, Rabbi Shergill.
His actual name is Gurpreet Singh Gill. He studied at Guru Harkrishan Public School, India Gate and Khalsa College, DU.
Rabbi created new genre of music, an integration of rock and sufiana. His first trade mark song ‘Bulla Ki Jana Main Kaun’ that made him famous overnight, illustrates this genre.
The song itself was written by the famous Sufi poet Bulle Shah. Few people understand the words of the song, much less their meanings beyond the first stanza. But still the song enthralls the listenrs.
The reason? The words appear to be rising up somewhere from the deepest layers of the heart. The soaring crescendo convyes an angst in quest for self identity and creates a kind of mystique, which in words of Sir V S Naipal is “very, very soulful”
The song amply exemplifies the universal power of music. You don’t understand the words, but you still love to hear it. Rabbi’s fans also include Amitabh Bachchan, and Meera Nair who compares him with Pakistan’s sufi singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
