Delhi could lose the right to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games if the Games Village has to be shifted from its present location. The Games Village, which is designed to house 8,500 athletes and officials, is being constructed on the banks of the Yamuna River.

A public interest litigation has been filed with the Delhi High Court regarding the environmental impact of building the Games Village on the bed of the Yamuna. According to organizing committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi, no stay order has been issued and construction work is in progress.

Austin Sealy, Chairman of the Commonwealth Games Federation’s coordination committee said that he would not like to comment on the court case, but he hoped the matter will be sorted out soon.

He said that if the Games Village is not ready on time, which in his opinion is unlikely, the Commonwealth Games will not be shifted to another city, but will be canceled.

The commission is impressed with the quality and standard of the facilities at the Games Village and feels that this village will be the best ever. However, there is concern about the delay in starting construction of the cycling velodrome.
