Gargi is a girls-only college that was founded in 1967 by the Delhi administration and is a constituent college of the University of Delhi. Situated near the historic Siri Fort, the college enjoys a unique positional advantage being within walking distance of National Institute of Fashion Technology, Siri Fort Auditorium, Ansal Plaza, The Spastics Society of Northern India and Yamini Krishnamurty's Institute of Classical Dance. Sprawling lawns with trees full of foliage, flowering plants and green grass are a specialty of Gargi with the cool shade of the trees being a big relief during the summer months.
The college is a three-in-one college catering to arts, science and commerce students. It has a little over 2000 students, 170 faculty members and 140 non-academic staff in all. In addition to regular courses offered at the other colleges of the Delhi University, Gargi college also provides two new courses: Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and a 3-year degree course in Industrial Microbiology.
Gargi is also a rich source of intellectual stimuli as it provides courses designed to broaden and develop students' interests in music, dance, theatre, films and art. The college offers an environment education program called Greening Gargi to make environmental studies a part of its curriculum, both as an academic exercise and an extra-curricular activity.
The College offers Honours as well as Pass courses in Commerce, Science and Arts streams. Admissions are strictly on the basis of marks secured in the Senior Secondary High School examination as the college declares a cut-off list for admission to various undergraduate courses every year. The application forms for admissions to the current year are available at the moment and the last date for submissions is 15th June 2007.
