Glasgow seeks help from Delhi Metro

NEW DELHI: Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is not only creating name for itself in Indian subcontinent but also in the European circle for its efficiency and preparation. This was apparent when a delegation of Glasgow metro met the director of DMRC as well as the Delhi transport minister Mr. Haroon Yusuf on Friday to know how the city is gearing itself for the Commonwealth games 2010.

Though just 10.5 km in length Glasgow has probably the oldest metro system in the world, it started its operation in 1896. The delegation which met DMRC chief E. Sreedhar was headed by Ron Culley, Chief Executive of Strathclyde Partnership for Transport of Glasgow, which operates the metro system in Glasgow.

The city of Glasgow which is next in line for hosting the commonwealth games 2014 is on a study tour as it’s planning an extension to its metro network. The delegation is very keen to know and learn how DMRC’s accomplished constructing a vast rail network in a short span of time.

According to DMRC officials, “The DMRC is one of the best example’s to study for extremely fast expansion in a very short time since we have built 65 km already and are constructing another 120 km before the commencement of the Commonwealth Games in 2010.”

As part of its study plan the delegation from Glasgow will be taking a metro ride on Sunday to get a first hand experience.  The Delhi transport minister assured all kind of help to the visiting delegation especially in the field of metro technology and construction.
