Gurudwara Bangla Sahib

Gurudwara Bangla SahibGurudwara Bangla Sahib is located in the heart of New Delhi’s Connaught Place area on the east side intersection of Ashok Road and Baba Kharag Singh Marg. It is a magnificent and spacious bungalow that was built by Raja Jai Singh of Jaipur; hence it has received the name Bangla Sahib. Raja Jai Singh commanded great respect and honor in the court of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb.

Eighth Guru Sri Harkishan had stayed here with Raja Jai Singh as his guest for a few months so it has become an important place of pilgrimage for Sikhs and Hindus. The story behind the stay of Guru is interesting and very inspiring. When Harkishan was made Guru, his elder brother Baba Ram Rai, became very agitated and he tried to influence the Sikhs, but in vain. Then he approached Aurangzeb to get the Gurugadi, who agreed to summon Harkishan to check his spiritual prowess.

At that time fortunately, Raja Jai Singh and his son were in Delhi and they promised to help Sikhs. The Raja persuaded Harkishan to come to Delhi and at the same time got an assurance from the Emperor that as long as he (the Emperor) was not satisfied about the succession issue, Guru Harkishan would stay with him in his bungalow as guest.

At that time cholera was spreading like the epidemic, so during his stay in Delhi, Guru spent most of his time in serving the humble, the sick and the destitute. He would also distribute the medicines, food and clothes and also all the offerings that he received daily, to the needy people. He won a number of admirers and soon his name spread throughout the city for his healing powers.

At present, in the basement of Gurudwara, the management runs a hospital. In the basement there is also an Art Gallery that depicts the various events connected with Sikh history. A school is also located in the adjoining building. A tank 225 x 235 ft with 18 ft wide Parikarma and 12 ft wide varandah has also been constructed.

You can contact the shrine on their telephone numbers: 91-11-23365486, 23342871 for further details or address.
