The main public transporter in New Delhi is Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC). It operates on most of the bus routes including the inner Ring Road and Outer Ring Road. The service is popularly referred as “Daudo tho Chado” ("Run to Climb") because the buses stop for very duration of time at the bus stops. The service is also one of the largest CNG powered bus service.
Major Inter State Bus Terminals in Delhi
The services of Delhi Transport Corporation are functional not only on the routes in Delhi, but also in many inter state routes. The inner services operate from about 34 bus depots while the interstate service operates from three Inter State Bus Terminals in:
• Kashmere Gate Inter State Bus Terminal
• Sarai Kale Khan Inter State Bus Terminal
• Anand Vihar Interstate Bus Terminal
Lesser Known Bus Station Terminals
• Shadipur Bus Depot
• Shivaji Bus Depot
DTC is operating Interstate Services in 6 states viz. Haryana, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmere, Rajasthan, Uttar Pardesh, Himachal Pardesh and Uttaranchal. The Corporation is operating about 88 Interstate Routes with about 818 buses. DTC is providing an efficient, comfortable, reliable, economical and properly coordinated bus services to the commuters of Delhi and adjoining states. Recently DTC has introduced VOLVO A/c Deluxe buses on Delhi-Udaipur and Delhi-Katra routes on daily basis from ISBT (Kashmere Gate).
DTC has also been a great part-taker in the recent friendship ties between India and Pakistan. It has been operating the regular buses between Delhi and Lahore. Delhi-Lahore Bus Service was inaugurated on 11th July 2003.
