Musical Play: K. L. Saigal

30/08/2008 - 19:00

SaigalScript and Direction: Dr. M. Sayeed Alam & Niti Sayeed
Cast – Tom Alter,Uday Chandra, Niti Phool etc.

It is a revisit to the aura and era of the great K L Saigal. It is a ‘Faction’--- where ‘facts’ blend with ‘fiction’ to result into a musical drama of a ‘never before’ kind.

The play portrays Saigal the immortal as well as Saigal the mortal — Saigal as Sita ji in Jammu, Saigal as salesman in Delhi, Saigal as struggler in Calcutta and Saigal as superstar in Bombay. In the process, it re-lives the music and cinema of yesteryears. Moreover, the story of Saigal is replete with events and anecdotes which center no less around the legends of equal stature, say, Ustad Fiyyaz Khan, D.V. Palusker, Punkaj Mullick, R.C. Boral, K.C. Dey, Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, Narain Rao Vyas and many more.

Play SaigalApart from the above, the play dotted with Saigal’s hits which envelope and suffuse the listener as no one else’s do. Say, “Aah ko chahiye ek umr asar hone tak”, Nukta cheen hai Gham-e dil” Rahmat pe teri mere gunahoon ko naaz hai” “Jab dil hi toot gaya ” and “Baalam aaye baso more man mein”,”Babul mora”, to name a few.

The play stars prominent theater-cine artistes of the country, notably TOM ALTER, India’s only Urdu speaking white man, and UDAY CHANDRA, who portrays Saigal and recites live as many as 10 hits of the legendary singer.
