The National Railway Museum houses different types of locomotives and is one of the famous tourists attraction in Delhi. For the people who love moving on the fast engines, a visit to the National Rail Museum is no less than an adventurous travel.
About the Museum
The National Railway Museum was established almost 140 years ago and holds a significant past of the Indian Railways. The museum showcases various models of train engines and coaches, including the model of India's first train, a steam engine, which had traveled from Mumbai to Thane in 1853. All the locomotives displayed bear a classic look and are extremely lovable.
In the year 1894, an elephant had had struck a Mail train, even its skull is projected in the museum. National Rail Museum is now a part of heritage.
Collections at the Museum
The museum encompasses some of the oldest locomotives in the world like the Viceregal Dining Car (1889), the Prince of Wales' Saloon (1875), Maharaja of Mysore's Saloon (1899), Maharaja of Baroda's Saloon (1886) and more. Interestingly a few of them are still in the working conditions. The intricate interior designs of these royal saloons are worth looking. Just purchase a ticket and get a glance of once a part of regal history - royal saloons.
As a souvenir to your visit to the museum you can buy a running toy train. If you want some deep knowledge library is there and if you are hungry walking through the huge campus, visit restaurant to enjoy delicious Indian food.. There are also Tibetan handicrafts on display and sale in Tibetan house.
One of the exciting attractions of the National Railway Museum is the Fairy Queen of 1885 - the oldest working steam engine. When the engine was at its prime, Prince of Wales and Maharaja of Mysore used it as a luxury saloon. Children can occupy these royal seats, as train is kept not merely for display, its active and carries children for a ride around the museum on a mini track.
