New taxiway Inaugurated at IGI for smooth flight movement

New Delhi: In another attempt to make the IGI airport meet the expectations of global travelers and ensure smooth flight movement at city’s IGI airport, a new high speed turnoff exit taxiway was commissioned at the airport on Thursday. The new taxiway, named Foxtrot, will be used by craft when the main runway will be in use.

According to Delhi International Airport (P) Limited (DIAL), the new taxiway has a length of 571 m and starts at 2,350 m from the beginning of runway 10. It will facilitate all domestic airlines from reaching their parking stands quickly.

The taxiway will reduce runway occupancy time for aircraft landing on the main runway 10/28 from the Dwarka side and heading to the domestic terminal. The aircraft will be able to turn onto Foxtrot after landing can vacate the runway sooner. Consequently, the waiting time for following aircraft will reduce and help them in landing sooner.

Two other taxiways — U and V — have been provided with fillets and exit ways, that facilitate the turning of the aircraft towards international terminal 2.

According to Delhi International Airport (P) Limited (DIAL) officials, a code F compliant runway and domestic terminal would be constructed by 2008 to cater to the growing traffic.

DIAL has also started work on the integrated passenger terminal and runway. The new terminal would be inaugurated in 2010 before the Commonwealth Games. With the new terminals and runway, Delhi Airport would be able to cater to 37 million passengers per annum and handle 75 aircraft movements per hour.

According to the master plan, the airport will finally be able to handle a total of 100 million passengers per annum by 2026.
