Just about a decade or so back ‘Delhi’ and ‘nightlife’ were two words not spoken in the same sentence; at least not if you wanted to say anything complimentary. The deserted roads and the downed shutters told it all even as cousins from happening-Mumbai snickered and tittered patronizingly. There were hardly any places you could go to for a drink with your buddies and almost nowhere to hang out with women friends. For majority of Delhiites an outing meant eating a la carte at a restaurant or a hotel or watching the latest Bollywood blockbuster and then back to bed post-haste.

Today being Raksha Bandhan recalls to mind the many film songs that have, over the years been made to mark the celebration of this festival, which is perhaps unique in the world, in that it celebrates the brother and sister bond.
The promos have led us to expect a warm, funny, poignant, likeable film with warm, funny, poignant, likeable characters and story however this weekend’s big release from Yash Raj Films, Lafangey Parindey has got rather mixed reviews.
Come August and the heart of every Indian starts to pound with a patriotic fervor usually reserved for international cricket matches. The same zeal is evoked at the sight of the tri-colour unfurling on the Red Fort. The very same place where Nehru delivered his ‘tryst with destiny’ speech has now become a symbol of our sovereignty and independence. After the Taj Mahal, the Lal Quila or the Red Fort is perhaps the most recognized monument in the country.
The cane furniture from Bareily is probably its most famous export. However there is more to this town sitting on the banks of the river Ramganga. As any devotee of Lord Shiva will agree it is an important city of pilgrimage with the four nath temples situated in the city’s four corners. It was also from Bareily that the famous Sufi-Barelvi sect Islam was born under the guidance of Ahmed Raza Khan.
Peepli Live has been Aamir Khan’s pet project for a while now and this satire about farmer suicides starring virtual unknowns (with the exception of Raghuveer Yadav who is a very recognisable face) has finally released this weekend.
Produced by Aamir Khan (which explains why he’s been plugging the film so much at every given opportunity) and directed by Anusha Rizvi, this one stars Omkar Das Manikpuri, Raghuveer Yadav, Vishal O Sharma, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Shalini Vatsa and Malaika Shenoy among other newcomers.
Want a glimpse of Indian villages without really traveling to an actual village? Welcome to Dilli Haat- a food and craft bazaar which offers an unforgettable rural experience without the dust and the grime. Located in one of the most important commercial centers of South Delhi, opposite the INA market, the 6 acres of land on which the sprawling Dilli Haat complex is situated, was salvaged as part of a reclamation project. Today it is a hub of activity frequented by art lovers and collectors of ethnic artifacts. The place has become a favorite haunt of college students especially those studying Textile or Apparel Designing. The patrons have a chance to interact with real artisans who showcase their ware inside the restive red brick ambiance.
With the new state of Uttarakhand coming into existence in the year 2000, the city of Dehradun transformed from a sleepy hill station to a bustling capital.
To put this film in a nutshell this is where the good natured meddling of the Jane Austen character Emma from the year 1815 meets Reese Witherspoon's air headed character from the immensely enjoyable Clueless with a dash of Sex and the City kind of glamour thrown in.
Seen as a brash, somewhat coarse city, Delhi has a lot to offer to the connoisseurs of art and culture. Many shows by well known national and international artists are put on regularly at places like the Lalit Kala Academy and the India Habitat Centre where “Yatra” an International festival of music and dance is currently being held. The Akshara Theatre at Baba Kharak Singh Marg is also showing “Dulari Bai”, a Hindi play presented by Jamghat. Baanee Sharad, the daughter of Hindi litterateur and satirist Sharad Joshi, is also bringing some stories of her father, to the Akshara stage this weekend. Those who actually want to perform can share the spotlight at a Talent Hunt being held at the Sri Ram Centre for Art and Culture, Connaught Place. The golden notes of Shubha Mudgal’s rendition of Kabir’s compositions are a not-to-be-missed event to be held on 28th August at the Chinmaya Auditorium, Lodhi Road.
