Auto and Cycle Rickshaws

Delhi provides a host of transport solutions. You may not want to travel by the public buses here, as they can get extremely crowded. The taxis in the city are the most common means used by tourists. The metro has recently come up as one of the most economical and comfortable solutions. However, if you are one for adventure, you should not miss a ride on the city’s auto and cycle rickshaws.

Auto Rickshaws
These are also called three-wheelers or simply autos and are good for shorter trips. They are available in large numbers and in almost all parts of the national capital and you can hail one down almost anywhere. These yellow and green contraptions can seat three (extremely slim!) people. They have no doors, so it’s best to avoid traveling by an auto rickshaw in winter. Be prepared for a rickety and bumpy ride and also to haggle on the price to be paid for the ride (as only a handful of auto drivers will agree to go by the meter). As a ballpark figure, you could pay Rs30-Rs40 for every 5kms you travel. So, auto rickshaws are much cheaper than taxis and are more easily available. If you are at a railway station, the best option is to look for the “prepaid” booth, where you can get an auto rickshaw without having to haggle and be worried about paying too much.

Cycle Rickshaws
These are three-wheeled pedal powered rickshaws and are legally allowed only in certain parts of the city. Two people can be seated comfortably at the back and the cycle rickshaws are good for very short distances. This is a cheap and environment friendly option and you can travel by one just for the experience itself. Some parts of the national capital, like places in Old Delhi, have really narrow lanes and traveling by a cycle rickshaw becomes the most practical option here. Cycle rickshaws do not have meters and you could agree to pay between Rs10 and Rs25 depending on the length of the journey.
