Countdown Starts for Commonwealth Games 2010

As the date of hosting the Commonwealth Games 2010 to comes nearer – there is a flurry of activities going everywhere – in every government department remotely connected to the games. Of late some judges of the high court gave their go ahead for building the Commonwealth Games village at Yamuna river bed near Akshardham.

With thousand days to go before the Commonwealth Games start, the Organizing Committee of the 2010 Commonwealth Games has started the countdown by organizing a 2010 Countdown run on 6th Jan. The registration is open till 5th Jan for those who are eager to be part of this spectacle and run. The registration for the run will be restricted to 30,000. Arrangements have been made for registration of the runners at 20 places across the city, including the Nehru Stadium, Chhattrasal Stadium, Yamuna Sports Complex, DTEA School (Mandir Marg), the Metro Stations outside Kashmiri Gate and Connaught Place.

The 2010 countdown run will be flagged off from Vijay Chowk, Rajpath at 3 pm and the unveiling ceremony of the Commonwealth Games 2010 mascot ‘Shera’ will be held at India Gate lawns at 5 pm.

The run, with everyone sporting green to show the ‘Green Games’ initiative, will feature Olympians and other sportsmen who have represented the country, apart from people from all walks of life.

Gracing the Countdown 2010 run will be galaxy of the country's past and present top athletes from various sports, including Anju Bobby George, Dola Banerjee, PT Usha, Milkha Singh, Manavjit Singh Sandhu, Karnam Malleswari, Kunjarani Devi, Gurbachan Singh Randhawa, Jyotirmoyee Sikdar, Madhumita Bisht, Zafar Iqbal, Ajit Pal Singh, Khazan Singh, Shiny Abraham, Pullela Gopichand, Mary C Kom and Dingko Singh.

According to the organizing committee all the sporting facilities are supposed to be ready by December 2009, and put to test through world level competitions in many disciplines before the Commonwealth Games.
