Delhi Becomes a Port of Sport

There has been an explosion of interest in sports and related activities in the national capital over the past few years. One can easily notice children engrossed in gully cricket or enjoying a colony level badminton tournament. Fake Chelsea jerseys are much in demand while practicing karate kicks.

There are numerous cricket academies to hone budding talents and there are boxing rings even in dingy areas, which means that there is no dearth of practice facilities for the medal winners of tomorrow. The city’s sports infrastructure continues to grow exponentially with more and more DDA Sports Complexes springing up.

It’s obvious; cricket has more facilities than any other game
It comes as no surprise that there are a number of cricket academies and more and more interschool tournaments are being held today to encourage children to realize their true potential. The National Stadium is one of the oldest venues where there are three grounds with each ground having two turfs and three cement pitches. There are six coaches to train kids who have registered with the stadium. There are various clubs in Delhi, such as Sonnet, Rohtak Road Gymkhana and Bright Club, which select talented kids for training.

Soccer is not far behind
Parents who see budding soccer stars in their young ones should encourage them to get into the school football team. This will give them exposure to competition during interschool leagues organized by the Delhi Soccer Association. Parents who wish to start their kids even earlier can take them to the Simla Young Club where kids above four years of age are trained.

Other Games
Although there are not many academies for hockey buffs, there are schools that provide training. The Sports Authority of India provides some training, though mostly at the advanced level. But don’t worry if you don’t have the right equipment… there are clubs that have training facilities and also provide equipment for hire.
