Delhi forging ahead to prosperity

Delhi is becoming a healthy, wealthy, bright and a vibrant city. The planning department of the Delhi government released an economic survey of the city that painted a rosy picture of economic indices.

According to the survey, the residents of the capital are getting richer every year. They are buying more new and bigger cars and consuming more power than other cities in India. They find it easier to get around and have better educational and health facilities.

A K Walia, finance and planning minister, government of Delhi told Hindustan Times that the “capital has become economically vibrant with progress in all social and economic sectors.”
Here are certain heartening facts and figures put forward by the economic survey:

Per capita income

Delhi's per capita income increased to Rs 66,728 in 2006-07 from Rs 58,655 the previous year having risen spectacularly from Rs 38,673 in 1999.It is more than double the national annual average of Rs 29,642.

Education and health

The Capital spends Rs 1,244 per person per annum on education - the national figure stands at just Rs 857. It has the health infrastructure and expenditure to back it. While the rest of the country spends Rs 260 per person annually on health, Delhi spends Rs 685.

Roads and Vehicles

In March 2007, Delhi had a whopping 52.32 lakh vehicles, more than Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai put together. Car density in Delhi is more than 10 times the national average. 85 people in every 1,000 own a car; the national average is only 8.

Every third Delhiite owns a motorized vehicle, whether it is a car or a two-wheeler. The growth in vehicles has far outstripped the growth in road-length.

Delhi now has 30,923 km of roads, up from the tiny 8,380 km of 1970-71. While the road network has increased 3.7 times, vehicles have increased 24 times. Here's why all roads lead to Delhi.

Delhi has 1,922.32 km of road length per 100 sq km as compared to the national average of 74.73 km.

Power Consumption

Per capita power consumption is highest among all states and union territories. It is 1,265 kilowatt/hour annually; the national average is 606 kilowsitt/hour.
