Fort Unchagaon

Did you know that you could see dolphins frolicking only 110 kms from Delhi? And if you’re lucky you might even see a crocodile swimming lazily by. All this is possible at Fort Unchagaon, situated along Ganges near Garh Mukteshwar on the Delhi-Moradabad highway.

The current “raja,” Raja Surendra Pal Singh, inherited Fort Unchagaon, on a left diversion off the highway 10 kms short of Brijghat, at the tender age of 10. The fort was built in the early 19th century and the current heir’s personal efforts have restored to the place to its previous glory. As the years passed, old palace was equipped with all modern amenities, making it a favourite getaway for the Raja’s near and dear ones. Over time, the erstwhile residence was renovated into a palace hotel that maintained its majestic feel. Fort Unchagaon now has 17 double rooms and suites.

There are a variety of activities to keep you very busy at Unchagaon. There are boat cruises and dolphin sightings tours on the Ganges or you could go horse riding on aristocratic Peshawari horses. Bullock cart rides, walks through the orchard and farms, the village haat, watching artisans at their craft or experiencing making your own piece of pottery at a real potter’s wheel, there is a lot to experience here.

Then of course you need to relax with a view of the magnificent white façade of the Surya Mahal, which is surrounded by beautifully maintained lush green lawns. Fort Unchagaon houses a multicuisine restaurant, to take care of you when you are peckish, and the Tuskar Bar for your liquid needs.

The tour packages begin at Rs. 3,200/- plus taxes per night for a couple, including breakfast. But then what is money when you get to live like a king for a night!
