Home science for boys too

Now boys too have an option to pursue a course in home science with all Delhi government schools having decided to make the subject optional for boys as well, from the forthcoming academic session.

The decision was taken after the directorate of education received a feedback from the boys' wing, which was equally interested in the subject as their girl counterparts. For long home science was the sole domain of girl students only.Reena Ray, secretary, directorate of education, NCT Delhi, feels that for most parents, teaching home science to boys is a stigma. Most parents feel that their boys should pursue engineering or science courses, but boys today are themselves keen to pursue home science and hence we took this decision, asserts Ray.

On the increasing popularity of the subject, Ray opines that exposure to television channels, like discovery, has changed the mindset of many Students. With the advent of cable TV, students are exploring the unexplored career options. Many boys are now keen to pursue a career in food and beverage industry, as they consider it one of the most challenging.

Moreover, the department has sent a proposal to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to change the name of the subject. The rationale behind this name change proposal is that parents have a notion that the subject is confined to cooking alone with the word ‘home’ in the subject.

Ray also pointed out that the subject can be beneficial for slow learners as home science is a relatively easy subject compared to subjects like mathematics or science, thus giving a boost to their career.
