Welcome Guest
Those who travel from Delhi to Haryana or,to Narela and Bawana via Mukarba Chowk on the outer ring road in the north Delhi know what foul smell atually means. There are mounds, rather, mountains of garbage, also called landfills, that welcome the visitors to the capital at this important entry point.
The stench here pervades the whole area. It is so strong, nauseating and intense that it almost explodes your lungs as it enters there through your nasal or oral routes. What makes the matters worse are the traffic jams during the hot, humid and sweltering months from April to August. Those stranded here feel as if they are being punished for some bad karma.
Things are changing now, thanks to the impending Commonwealth Games or civic sense descending upon our civic body. The garbage landmass will soon be converted into a glittering pleasure destination. The area will have a sculpture park, go-carting track, kite-flying arena, amphitheatre and much more.
The decision to covert the landfill into a green belt was taken in October last year. The date to launch the greening project is to be decided at a meeting to be held between the MCD and DDA officials within a fortnight. The landfill area is to be developed into a phased manner. The site would be divided into two parts by a road at the Mukarba chowk. It is learnt that the MCD has transferred the land to the DDA.The MCD plans to continue dumping the garbage on the side of the compost plant near the Rajiv Nagar colony on the east.
The area to be developed into green belt lies on the side of Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar on the north. A clover leaf flyover bridge is coming over the road.
A study of the site shows that the surface in not uniform. This would mean that the greening project will have to be different for various levels. There is a proposal to build an entrance plaza from the NH-1 entry point. A multi- purpose area comprised of a food court, children park, a public plaza and a congregation point for organizing functions during festivals will be created in the green area.
