Mass Rapid Transport also known as Delhi Metro rail service has changed the face of Delhi's transport system and has brought Delhi on the map of world class metros. Started in 1998, the Delhi Metro started its commercial operations on 24th December, 2002 and has set up new bench marks in efficiency and is continuously expanding at very rapid pace. As of July 2007, Metro operates 3 lines with a total length of 65.70 km and 59 stations while several other lines are under construction.
Delhi metro rail service has also developed feeder bus services to connect its stations with various parts of the city to enable the commuters to dispense with their cars which cause pollution and traffic problems.
Delhi Metro has introduced, for the first time in the country, a ticketing and passenger control through a completely automatic fare collection system. The ticket is in form a card or token which is available to the passenger from the ticket counter. The passenger can go to a gate in the paid area which is separated from the unpaid area.

Considered most convenient for the frequent commuter, Stored value cards, Travel Cards are available in the denominations of Rs. 100, 200 and 500.

Tourist Card:
For unlimited travel over short periods, there are two kinds of cards - 1 day and 3 day.

Token:
- Single-Journey Token: For one way journey
- Value will depend on the destination. Valid only on the day of purchase.
Metro Timings
The Metro Trains run from 6:00 AM in the morning till about 11:00 PM in the night.
Line 1--The trains on the elevated section between Shahdara and Rithala cover a distance of 22.8 Kms in about 39 minutes. The frequency of train services in the elevated section varies from 4 minutes during peak hours up to 12 minutes during non peak hours.
Line II--On the Underground section the train frequency varies from 8 minutes at peak time up to 12 minutes in non peak hours. The 11 Kms Underground section between Vishwavidyalaya and Central Secretariat is covered in 18 minutes 30 seconds approximately.
Line III-- Barakhamba - Dwarka Sector 9 covers a distance of 29.29 Kms. The frequency varies 8 minutes at peak hours and 12 minutes in non peak hours. The 29.29 Kms section between Barakhamba - Dwarka Sector 9 section is covered in 55 minutes 30 seconds approximately.
The cost for traveling in Delhi Metro ranges from Rs. 6 (minimum) to Rs.22 (maximum) at present
