Mission DU College Admission - I Am Possible!
Submitted by rajat on Sun, 24/05/2009 - 12:24
As the summers reach their peak and Delhi-ites break into a sweat, it’s time for school children to start thinking about the next big moment of their lives…DU college admission. With all its nail biting admission moments, board examination anxiety looks childish. And it is the season that thousands from all over India stream into Delhi as DU is recognized as the numero uno amongst all universities in India. College life too is a different ball game, there is no kid glove treatment, from the admission processes to attending the classes itself…and Delhi school going kids do grow up fast to take the DU college studies leap pretty fast.

The challenges for the college aspirants are many:

•    Which course to opt for?
•    Whether to go for the traditional (B.Com & B.A. etc.) courses or to get enrolled in the professional ones  (Mass Communication, Interior Designing etc.)?
•    What is the best college for that course?
•    Is a professional course like Charted Accountancy or Company Secretary necessary along with the regular graduation?

Luckily with the tremendous pace of expansion (both infrastructure and course wise) that Delhi University is following, students now have ample options to analyze their strengths and tastes and then select the most relevant option for them from the incredible menu of courses offered by the DU.

The most common mistake made by many a student is to follow the cycle in the wrong sequence. Many get attracted by the charisma of the colleges and keep that as a prior consideration. Depending on the best college they could secure admission into the next thing is to decide the course. Remember the old saying?? Well begin is half won!
So the most important primary decision should be to chalk out the course (academic or professional) which you enjoy. And to take this decision its good to take advice of your teachers, eminent professionals in your family and even your school seniors now studying across DU. So when finalizing the decision for the first option (which course?), remember to do a lot of independent and collective brainstorming : after all its your life…isn’t it?

Another common confusion is to decide between an academic or a professional course. Just remember a simple mantra to overcome this brain-chaos. Had Dr. Manmohan Singh been confused during his student days to go for a degree in Economics or to become a musician by learning music then the country would not have got such a great PM and he would not have been able to earn so many laurels for himself, his family and the whole country. Similarly if Ustad Bismillah Khan would have chosen a degree in any subject over his Shehnai then your first reaction would have been to make faces on hearing another (his) common name here. So all these great people have achieved global acclaim because of their profession passion, work dedication and immense self confidence. So all you need is tons of self-belief, a clear future vision, and dogged determination to excel and never ever slacken your pace of excellence.

After you have decided on your course the second step is to choose the best institute. Here the criteria could be: recent placement record, faculty, competitive edge over similar institutes (infrastructure, industry participation, brand name etc) and the lineage of the institute.

For those who want to leap frog into the professional world, you can even multi-task. Especially for those going for academic courses (BSc, BCom) you can even get enrolled for professional courses like C.A. or C.S. Hey just don’t jump into these courses because of any family or peer pressure. Do your own SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) Analysis. Enrolling for a professional course and leaving it half way because of not being able to tackle the dual pressure of this course and your degree can prove to be a futile attempt. This short sighted approach at times could even land you in a soup by affecting your performances in both of them.

To live your Mission Admission vision better you need to have the right strategy: Right Course?Right College?Ability to do multi-tasking (if you have the time, mental and physical stamina). Hopefully every student going to Delhi University this time will take the right decision from his/her mind and heart (balanced). Remember it’s your ability of working hard and to be able smartly think about course choices will make you a more informed professional always. Best of Luck!!
