Bombay to Bangkok
While Nagesh Kuckunoor’s Bombay to Bangkok is a tad disappointing, it’s definitely worth watching once. Kuckunoor has come up with a light entertainer again, similar to the genre he started with. The problem with Bombay to Bangkok lies right in the root of the film, the script. While we won’t say that the plot won’t interest you at all, it’s not gripping like his earlier efforts. The start is good but the director loses his grip through the course of the film. Although the photography is impressive, we are simply used to it as his earlier films have had even better cinematography.
The story revolves around Shankar (Shreyas Talpade), a small time cook in Mumbai, who flees to Bangkok after stealing money from a local don (Naseeruddin Shah) and ends up losing it. He meets a lovely Thai lass, Jasmine, but he has a problem here as well. He cannot talk to her due to the language barrier. Shreyas Talpade performs effortlessly well, while the leading lady, Lena, is also impressive. The music of the film is entertaining.
Jodhaa Akbar
Jodhaa Akbar is a film of epic proportions. The storyline of the film has been executed with extensive research in which the female lead, played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, is presented as a mere pawn in the game of political one-upmanship. The movie is set in the sixteenth century, and revolves around the love between Mughal emperor Akbar and his bride, a Rajput princess named Jodhaa. Jodhaa Akbar’s music is designed to be magnificent, but the effort shows. The song Jashne-Bahara, written by Javed Akhtar and sung by Javed Ali, gels well with the flow of the movie. While the movie is entertaining, its length (3.20 hours) goes against it.
