Pravasi Bharatiya Divas - Economics Set to Take a Backseat

The Indian Diaspora from the world over comes together annually during the “Pravasi Bharatiya Divas” to reminisce about the past, renew their bonds with their motherland and see what lies ahead. Unlike the previous ones, which were held for three days, the sixth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas will be held over two days, January 8 and 9. There will be a welcome reception for guests on January 7. The conclave will begin with an inaugural address by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, whereas the Mauritius PM Naveenchandra Ramghulam will be the chief guest on the occasion.

The earlier tone of the government, which was going after NRI capital in a single-minded manner, has given way to increased emphasis on social and developmental issues. Keeping the agenda in-line with these objectives, the first session would focus on engaging the Persons of Indian Origin with issues related to the health and education sectors. These sectors have already seen some momentum building, with the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin adopting 50 villages and the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin planning to link with the rural health centers in south India.

There is another session planned to strengthen the bond between the second or later generations of persons of Indian origin who may not have that strong a bond with India like the earlier generations. The launch of “India Development Fund” is likely to be another highlight of the event, which would be somewhat like a single window donation facility for Indians willing to contribute for philanthropic causes.

Although economic issues are taking a backseat here, it doesn’t mean those looking for opportunities should be disappointed. The business-to-business interaction may always yield something positive during the conference. The President of India Pratibha Patil would attend the valedictory session and present the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards.
