The people of Delhi will get a science city modeled upon the Kolkata Science City that came up in July 1997 and has been a major educational attraction since then. The Delhi science city will come up at Sarai Kale Khan in about four years time and will cost Rs.25 crore. The project has been proposed by the Union Ministry of Clture, which has already earmarked a 5.6-acre site on the ring road.
The Urban Development Ministry will soon acquire the land for the project. The construction of the science city will be undertaken by the ministry in association with the National Council of Science Museums, which also developed the Kolkata center.
The Delhi Science City will have more attractive features than its Kolkata counterpart. The objective of the project is to combine knowledge of science with entertainment. The science city will offer a virtual tour of the endless outer space, which would be a kind of extension of the Nehru Planetarium. You do not have to buy tickets worth millions of dollars and wait for years to travel into the outer world in Russian or Virgin Atlantic space shuttles.
Some other wonderful features of science are also being planned. They include an evolution park theme tour, a musical fountain, a maritime center, a 3D-vision theatre, time machine, butterfly garden, outdoor science park and a hall for exploration of the earth. The 3-D visual theatre will use Polaroid based stereo projections to create special three-dimensional effects. Some blocks will be dedicated to special scientific subjects.
It is going to be one of the most ambitious projects and will be among the finest in the world. The target visitors would not only be the school students, but also the amateur scientists, scholars, local and international visitors and, of course, the common public.
The proposed science center will ‘‘present science and technology in a stimulating and engaging environment that is truly educational and enjoyable for people of all ages’’.The ministry hopes to recreate the Kolkata magic in the capital too.
