Theatre in the city

When it comes to being entertained, Delhiwalas are practically hooked onto the television. Be it serials about mothers-in-law or cricket matches, Delhi has come to expect a lot from the idiot box. And when people step out of the comfort of their homes, they mostly head towards the numerous movie halls and restaurants that have sprung up in every corner of the national capital.

Despite this trend, theatre has not lost its charm in the city. This is true even among Gen-Y. You would find some really good plays being organized by repertories from across India as well as from other countries. These are definitely worth checking out.

Delhi is home to the National School of Drama, which is among the country’s leading theatre training institutions. It was set up in 1959 as a unit of the Sangeet Natak Akademi and became an independent entity in 1975. Since the late 1990s, the National School of Drama has been organizing the Bharat Rang Mahotsav, a national theatre festival that is usually held during the second week of January every year. The festival this year lasted for 12 days and had about six plays staged every day. The British Council and Max Muller Bhawan also organize plays by international artists.

While there are several auditoriums in Delhi, among the best are:
Kamani Auditorium - Copernicus Marg, Janpath

Sri Fort Auditorium - Asiad Village Complex, Khel Gaon Marg

Phone: 23383420
India Habitat Centre - Lodhi Road

LTG (The Little Theatre Group) Auditorium - Next to Kamani Auditorium, Copernicus Marg, Mandi House

So, the next time you want to go out and do something fun, check out if there is a play at one of the good auditoriums.
