Vintage car rally has Delhi mesmerized

The Indian senior and under-19 cricket teams gave us the wonderful gift of victory last Sunday. But what really got the adrenalin pumping for the people of Delhi and Gurgaon last Sunday was the 42nd annual Statesman car rally. The rally showcased more than 100 vintage and classic cars.

Classic beauties ranging from the graceful Rolls-Royce and Jaguar to the eye-catching Ford and Austin grabbed the attention of spectators who had traveled from across the country to be part of this rally. Car owners also came from all nooks and corners of the country to participate in the event. The rally inspired equal enthusiasm and excitement from the younger and older generation. The great event was graced by the presence of the Chief of Army Staff, General Deepak Kapoor, who flagged off the rally that started from the Statesman House in Central Delhi. He appreciated the maintenance efforts of all the car owners and encouraged them to keep up their spirits.

The old beauties had their ride through different areas of New Delhi. On their way to Sohna, some of the vintage cars were seen struggling a bit against the newer cars. However, all vintage and classic cars got their fair share of attention and admiration. Following a short break at Westin Resort, all participants headed with great enthusiasm towards Sohna. The 50-km driving stretch may have been a bit tiresome for some, but the spirits were high.

The return journey from Sohna was flagged off by Brigadier B. B. Sood. This procession was lead by a 1914 Morris Belsile and ended at Modern School, Barakhamba Road.

Every car owner received a certificate of participation. The 1913-Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, owned by Mrs. Wasia Ibrahim, won the award for being the oldest participant in the rally. Ms. Malika Sahani, the owner of a 1952 Ford, was selected as the best woman driver.

It was an out and out “golden Sunday” for all car lovers.
