This very popular eatery in New Friends Colony has transformed my Tuesday, which previously was always a little dull. Tuesday isn’t as painful as Monday, nor is it an effective ‘mid week’ marker like Wednesday. It is just time to live through. Until you discover ‘Table on Tuesday’ at Yum Yum Tree. Imagine, a starter, a main, limitless cold plates from the conveyer belt, limitless tiger beer, limitless dessert (dessert!), all for (wait for it!)… 500Rupees. Too good to be true? Well, yes, that price doesn’t include taxes. But still, if this combination doesn’t guarantee a good night, I can only push you in the direction of the nearest psychiatrist.
The Grill features a live kitchen where you can watch the surprisingly small army of chefs at work as they feed a full dining room with remarkably efficiently. I was almost sure I saw the small one do a back somersault across the kitchen to reach the stove. That is testimony to the level of energy and dexterity that these men exhibit. And you can be sure, as they slice and dice in front of your eyes, that all you eat is freshly prepared on the night.
In the centre of the restaurant, a conveyor belt traverses the wooden tables. It carries a host of delectable dishes in small space-age like containers to the room. I especially liked the crunchy prawn rolls with mayo-mustard and I found myself aggressively snatching them out of the reach of my fellow diners. Another dish from the conveyer belt that I enjoyed was the cucumber and mint with pepper. Although modest, it demonstrated a culinary delight in the power of good, simple ingredients. A friend of mine, a veteran of ‘Table on Tuesday’, reported that the plates from the conveyer were not as good as usual. I almost fell off my seat.
The ambience in Yum Yum Tree makes for a very comfortable evening. The bare brick walls and the benched seating gives the place the feel of an NYC loft-space, but it cheekily side-steps being overly fancy with large colourful collages that are cheerful and friendly. This is sophistication and elegance without the haughty pretension.
The menu is similarly full of interesting and bold ideas, it offers a true adventure into the Orient; from Cambodian three garlic chicken to stuffed lotus stem mushroom caps, there is a lot of new experiences awaiting the inquisitive visitor. However, if there is but one dish you order, may it be the tenderloin satay with peanut sauce. I am dribbling over my keyboard at the mere memory. For me, that one dish justified the entire 500R expense. There are few words to describe how good this is and none of them are printable; the meat is so succulent your mouth will ache with pleasure. Vegetarians, I urge you to reconsider.
The feast is bountiful and respect must be shown to all who make it to dessert, however the achievement rewards itself. Whether you are a warm and sticky chocolate mud pudding kind of person or more inclined towards smooth and light cappuccino mouse, you will not be disappointed. Why make any decisions? The portions are small enough that it is surely only sensible to ‘sample’ each and every one of them. After all, they are unlimited.
