Politely Yours … Delhi Police Strives to Present a Friendly Face

For a change, Delhi Police personnel are willing to take instructions… and are asking for more. About 800 newly recruited constables are graduates and approximately 100 are postgraduates, a qualification level that was not seen earlier in the lower echelons of the Delhi Police. If you thought this was just a coincidence, we’d like to remind you that the 2010 Commonwealth Games are fast approaching and our very own police force has decided to go for an image makeover so that they are ready for the event in time.

Delhi is expected to experience a huge influx of foreigners during the games and police personnel will be playing an important role in guiding and managing visitors from various nations. So, if you get to see the suave and sophisticated face of the Delhi Police, don’t be surprised, just make sure that you complement their efforts to serve tourists from all over the world. In fact, the recently recruited batch of constables is being trained with the goal of presenting an urbane and friendly face to the public in general and to tourists in particular. The training aims to make the policemen aware of Delhi’s history, be polite and familiar with English and sign language so that the personnel may be able to efficiently help a foreign tourist or others in need. Those doing well in the training, especially with problem solving aspects, will be posted at important locations during the Commonwealth Games 2010.

The trainers point out that with each passing day of the training, the recruits are exuding rising confidence levels and view this as a good opportunity to pick up new skills and a new language. Constables have been specifically targeted for this programme, since officers above the sub-inspector level are already well equipped in English and other subjects being taught here.
