NEW DELHI: Speaking at the foundation laying ceremony of Thayagaraja Sports complex at South Delhi on Wednesday – CM Sheila Dhikshit assured the game officials as well as citizens of Delhi that all construction work related to Commonwealth Games-2010 would be completed by 2009.
Rumors were doing the rounds that Delhi will not be ready in time to host the Commonwealth games-2010, but her comments have cleared all doubts as far as infrastructure development is concerned. She further added that in certain cases the work has been accelerated to meet the deadline. Also present at the function was Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Mani Shankar Aiyar.
The CM further added that in the process of hosting the games – Delhi will become a world class city and hoped that the citizens of Delhi would extend courteous behavior to the visiting officials, sportsmen and other people during the Games.
Mr. Aiyar, speaking on the occasion assured Commonwealth Games Federation chief executive officer Mike Cooper, who was present at the function, that all the work at the complex will be completed by November 2009.
Once ready the Thyagaraja Sports Complex will be an air-conditioned indoor stadium; and will be constructed over a 65,500 square meter plot having state-of-the-art facilities and a seating capacity of nearly 7,000. It would have a parking facility for 450 vehicles and there would be five tennis courts, besides playing arenas for athletics and sports like net ball.
