Delhi government has recently announced that more engineering and medical colleges will be opened in the underdeveloped areas of the metropolis. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit inaugurated Chaudhary Brahm Prakash Government Engineering College in Jaffarpur, southwest Delhi on Saturday the 19th January. This is the first of the several institutions that are proposed to be set up in the underdeveloped areas.
The college will start two courses from the next academic session. The first is the bachelor degree course in Architecture and the second is B-Tech in Environmental Engineering and Management. There are also plans to introduce post-graduate courses in several subjects such as Environmental Engineering and Management, Urban Infrastructure Planning, Disaster Mitigation and Transport and Planning.
Mrs Dikshit also added that the present polytechnics would be upgraded and more engineering and medical colleges would be established for the benefit of the students in underdeveloped areas. She further said, “It is our government's aim to develop Delhi into a centre of excellence in an area, which is much needed for the development of our city as well as our country. The government of Delhi has already set up Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University to support the phenomenal growth of technical education in Delhi. The University promotes the growth of self-financing institutions under its affiliation.”
The GGSIPU has announced that admission brochures and application forms for applying to various undergraduate and post-graduates courses shall be available from January 21, 2008. The admission brochures and admission forms can be bought from 48 branches of the Punjab & Sindh Bank. Online application forms will also be accepted. The online application forms can be downloaded from the university’s website, www.ipu.ac.in [1]. The last date of accepting the application forms is April 21, 2008.
"While admission brochure-I is meant only for professional programs, admission brochure-II is for the engineering and B.Arch. programs and admission brochure-III is for the MBBS programs," said Rashmi Atal, GGSIPU spokesperson.
Admission to all the 38 academic programs would be granted on the basis of Common Entrance Tests. Admission tests for MBA, MBBS, MCA and B-Tech courses shall be held in 12 cities across India, - Mumbai, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Bhopal, Noida, Jalandhar, Nagpur and Ahmedabad. Admission tests for other courses shall be held in Delhi only.
Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is planning to introduce a new course in book publishing from July 2008 session. The university has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Federation of Indian Publishers (FIP) to design, develop a course for a Postgraduate Diploma in Book Publishing.
