Bus transport is the easiest option for commuting in the capital at affordable fares. It is a common man's transport. Unfortunately for the Delhiites, this mode of transport is beset with problems of over-crowding.
There are two types of bus services on the capital's roads. One is the DTC bus service. It is inefficient because it is state- run service and the operational staff does not perform its duty due to the security of service. The other is the private Blue Line service which is run by the influential politicians and mafia groups. The drivers and conductors of the Blue Line busses defy all norms of traffic safety to make money. The service has earned the name of killer line.
The Delhi Government announced a plan in September, 2002 to revamp the entire transport system. It aimed at streamlining the existing public bus transport network by rationalizing the bus routes, bus lanes for selected corridors, introduction of the premium bus services and so on. The plan also included running high capacity bus service-HCBS- and developing dedicated corridors for the service.
Of late DTC has introduced air-conditioned buses and a brand new fleet of low-floor buses on city streets. A revamp plan is underway to improve bus-shelters in city and integrate GPS systems in DTC buses and bus stops so as to provide reliable information about bus arrivals.
Metro rail feeder bus services have also been started on Shahdra - Rithala route.
The Delhi Government has also decided to phase out the killer Blue Line busses under the pressure from the Delhi High Court.
DTC has deployed about 3106 CNG buses for the city/NCR service. There are plying on about 773 routes on Delhi Roads. The fares of different category of services are given hereunder: -
