South Delhi is treasure trove for heritage lovers. It is that part of the city that saw rise and fall of many citadels, architectural marvels and empires. It consists of first four cities of Delhi - Qila Lal Kot, Siri, Tughlaqabad, Jahanpanah.
Angapal, a Tomar Rajput ruler, founded Lal Kot. Later Qutbuddin Aibak made it famous by raising the tallest tower in India, Qutb Minar, in 12th century. As the city started spreading, a second city around Siri was constructed by Alaud-Din Khalji (1296-1316). The third city, Tughlaqabad, was brought into existence by Ghiysud-Din Tughlug (1321-51). After the desertion of Tuglaqadbad due to scarcity of water, Mohammad bin Tughlaq constructed Delhi's fourth city called - Jahanpanah - close to the Qutab Minar solely to protect his people living in the open plains from attack by invaders. With cities being built around, water cannot be kept at bay. Hauz Kas (or Khas) provides a meticulous insight to the water systems of a bygone era.
Even in the advanced state of ruins and ramparts, history still stands in dignity. In fact among the oversize skyscraper modern buildings it provides a stunning synthesis of yesterday, today and tomorrow. And to this, National Railway Museum acts as a connection. This unique museum, which entertains every one unmindful of age, is a collection of times gone by, heritage, romance, nostalgia, fun, leisure.
Coming back to present, the Bahai House of worship on the Bahapur hills is a live example of what modern technology can achieve in architecture
