Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple

The Majestic Akshardham TempleThe Majestic Akshardham Temple

One of Delhi’s latest and extremely popular tourist spots is the Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple that provides an excellent reflection of the essence and magnitude of India's ancient architecture, traditions and timeless spirituality. Completed in 2005, no expense has been spared in decorating this large and elaborate temple carved of red sandstone.

The central monument, built without any steel, houses an 11-ft golden statue of the founder of the Swaminarayan faith, Bhagwan Swaminarayan. The Premvati food court on grounds serves up fast, cheap, huge but mediocre portions of vegetarian food (Rs. 75 for a thali).

Some of the interesting things to do inside include:

Hall of Values - Universal values for mankind presented through audio-animatronics and light and sound diorama presentations from the life of Bhagwan Swaminarayan.

Boat Ride - A 12-minute fascinating boat-ride experience of 10,000 years of India's glorious heritage. Learn about the discoveries and inventions of the rishi-scientists of India, see the world’s first university of Takshashila and sail through the caves of Ajanta-Ellora.

Musical Fountain - An intriguing combination of a large stone step-well and a Vedic yagna kund with a colorful musical fountain that echoes Vedic sentiments and prayers.

Garden of India - Sixty acres of lush lawns, gardens and exquisite bronze statues of India's child gems, valorous warriors, national figures and great women personalities inspire visitors with values and national pride.

Visitors are requested to make note of the fact that there is a strict ban on all electronic items including cameras, tobacco and pretty much everything except the clothes on your back. Thankfully there is a cloakroom where visitors can leave their worldly belongings.

Address – N. H. 24, Near Noida Mor, New Delhi

How to Reach – The temple is located near Noida in East Delhi. The best way to reach would be to take a bus or auto to the temple as there is no Metro station nearby.
