Shanti Mohalla – the name is deceptive as it doesn’t give the true
picture of this bustling textile market in east Delhi, which is
anything but peaceful. Quite possibly, most of the people living in
Delhi have never heard of this place before.

Balconies peeping through overgrown greens, the clatter of tea cups, the chatter of afternoon conversation in high Bengali; now a sneeze of shorshe maach being tossed in a kitchen, and then the incessant pounding of a relentless young drummer’s jam session and, every once in a while, the odd dhoti-clad man with his black umbrella swinging through the streets.

The redevelopment and beautification program launched by the Delhi government is showing no signs of slowing down. The government has now turned its attention towards renovating and beautifying main markets.

The Vasant Kunj mall project, which had got stuck in regulatory troubles with the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) putting a stop to all construction activity on account of non-submission of certain environmental compliance documents, finally seems to have got back on track. According to reports, the ministry had finally given its formal ascent to the mall developers and granted them permission to resume construction after payment of a hefty penalty.

Yamuna is one of the major rivers of India having the total length of about 1370 km. The source of Yamuna is Yamunotri in the Uttaranchal Himalaya, which is north of Haridwar in the Himalayan Mountains. Yamuna River flows through the states of Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh and finally merges with river Ganges in Allahabad. A number of prominent cities such as Delhi, Mathura and Agra lie on the bank of river Yamuna.
