The National Museum of Natural History, located on the busy Barakhamba Road, can be easily spotted by the model of a huge Tyrannosaurus-Rex placed on the outside. Established as an institution with the aim to create awareness on the natural heritage of India, the Museum is the only place in the capital to give detailed information about India's rich flora and fauna and other environmental issues through exhibits. The museum does this through several theme-based galleries.
The first gallery of the museum presents an introduction to the origin and evolution of life and presents the variety and diversity of the flora and fauna of India. The next gallery of the museum gives an overview of the major ecosystems of the world, and throws light on issues concerning environmental hazards, food chains, and inter-relationship between man, flora and fauna.
The third gallery of the museum concentrates on promoting conservation and informs people of its importance through life size dioramas and models. The most striking feature of this gallery is the exhibit acknowledging the contribution of Bishnoi community of Rajasthan to conservation of flora and fauna in that state.
A must visit destination for students and science buffs, the museum has a large collection of fossils and stuffed animals and birds apart from a Bio-Science Computer Room, an Activity Room and a Mobile Museum.
