Welcome Guest
Delhi's Tibet House was established in 1965 by the Dalai Lama, in order to preserve the unique cultural heritage of Tibet at a time when it faced extinction in its homeland. It incorporates the Tibet House Museum, which depicts the rich variety of Tibetan art and culture through displays of sculptures, paintings, carpets and ritual objects.
The major attractions of the museum are the rare painted rolls, known as 'tangkhas' in the local language, belonging to 15th century Tibetan monasteries, beautiful Buddha figurines and antique jewellery apart from colorful wooden sculptures, musical instruments, old currency notes, carpets and ritual items. Some objects have been collected from monasteries in Tibet while others have been created at the various Tibetan settlements scattered across India.
There is also a library with a good collection of books on Tibet's history, tradition and religion and for souvenir-seekers there is a shop on the ground floor that sells wonderful Tibetan handicrafts, clothes, curios, jewellery and even medicines.
