The temple is an exact replica of the original Guruvayurappan Temple situated at Kerala. The foundation of this temple was laid by the Sankracharya on October 2, 1986. According to the temple officials, the land over which the temple is built was actually owned by a Kashmiri widow before it was allotted to the Temple by the DDA. The lady wanted to build a temple on it. Her wish could not be fulfilled as the DDA took over the land. After many years the daughter of the original landowner came looking for the land. She found to her surprise, that the land had been allotted to a temple. She donated Rs. 40, 000 towards the construction of the temple. Her name is carved on the canopy of the Ayyappa shrine to respect and remember her contribution.
During the initial years, there was just a boundary wall and the main sanctorum, but now the temple has evolved into socio-religious cultural hub. The sacred premises draws a large number of devotees every day to offer worship to deities like lord Krishna, Chottanikkara Bhagavathy (Devi), Lord Vigneswara, Lord Shiva and Lord Ayyappa.
You can see the sacred precincts of the temple as you enter from the main gate. You will see a window on the right hand for buying offerings to the deities and booking special pujas. Going further up on the right hand side around the temple, you see the ‘Gokulam’ a double-storey building, which houses the temple priests and dignitaries coming from different places.
There is a cultural complex called “Panchajanya” for holding cultural programs. It is a spacious, well designed modern auditorium on the ground floor and has an equally big and ornate hall on the first floor.
The temple complex also houses a library in its basement which is well stocked with books on religion, philosophy, art and culture. A new much bigger socio-cultural complex covering an area of 30,000 sq. meters has been built to meet the demand from the devotees.
The Temple celebrates its annual festival – a week long affair- in the month of May every year with much fanfare. During the annual festival the entire temple complex is bedecked with flowers and lights. It is a sight to behold in the evening when all the lights and diyas are lighted. The temple also invites established artists in the field of traditional temple arts, such as Ottam Thullal, Chakya Koothu and Koodiyattam, from Kerala to show their skills.
In addition to fulfilling the religious needs of the community, the temple also holds competitions in classical and light devotional music, Narayaneeyam and Jnanappana.
When you enter the temple, you will find of some of the finest mural paintings done in natural colors on the walls. The knowledge of natural colors is now a dying art and is limited only too few surviving traditional mural artists of Kerala.
Apart from all these, the temple has also started running a charitable medical centre where medical care is provided to everyone irrespective of religion, cast and creed. The temple is a true symbol of humanistic aspect of religion. Many top politicians and high officials including the Presidents and Prime Ministers have visited the temple. All of them have appreciated the work being carried out by the Uttara Guruvayurappan Templ. A must visit for all the devotees.
