A house is different from home. A house is made up of bricks and mortar. It becomes a home when people start living in it. Your home can provide you special peace and joy if you energize it on Vastu principles.  If you apply certain principles of Vaastu to your home, it can become a source of health, wealth, peace and prosperity. Vaastu can bring in a constant flow of positive and vibrant pran energy to your home.

The word ‘Vaastu’ is derived from ‘vas’ which means to ‘reside’ or ‘a place to live’.  Vaastu is an ancient Vedic science which follows the laws of space and science cumulatively called the cosmic law. The principles of Vaastu study the correlation between the five elements of nature, which are: water, air, fire and earth. According to Vaastu, an ideal balance of all these five elements is essential for bringing in harmony and peace in one’s life.

It must be known that the universe is governed by certain laws of nature. When we follow them and attune ourselves to their rhythm, we experience harmony and bliss. Conversely, when we divert away from them, we experience turmoil, obstacles, ill health and other disappointments in our life.

According to Vaastu, an open area in the east and north east in a building is considered auspicious. A scientific reason for this belief is that the sun rises in the east. The sun rays bring in the helpful medicinal properties in the first half of the day and harmful ultraviolet radiations in the second half. While the sun rays in the first half of the day kill the harmful bacteria, the ultraviolet rays in the second half of the day fall on the walls on the south and south west, so that we are saved from their detrimental ultraviolet radiation.

Another principle of Vaastu is that we should make the south and south east area of the house heavier than its north and northeast. This should be done to balance it with the tilt of the earth towards the northeast of its axis. The core of the mother earth is considered the center of the earth and it exercises a strong gravitational pull. The center of the earth also balances all its spheres, lithosphere, atmosphere and biosphere. In the same way, the centre of the house also controls the entire house. It pulls in positive energy from the environment and circulates it inside the house. Therefore, we should either keep our house open or lighted to freely admit the positive energy.

According to Vaastu, a vaastu purush, a mystical entity, resides in every home. The head of the vaastu prursh should always be placed in the north east of the house. If you are building a house, you must specify the placement of the body parts of the vaastu purush.  This helps in bringing the positive energy in your house.

You and your family spend maximum time in your house. Therefore, your house should vibrate with positive energy and give you peace and bliss. The positive energy helps you to unwind the stress, relax and rejuvenate your system. The center of your house is the naval of the vaastu purush. It also absorbs positive energy and circulates it in the entire house.

The homes in ancient times were built on the principles of vaastu. All the rooms would open in the central courtyard where all the members of the family would meet and relax. A ‘tulsi’ plant in the centre would complete the picture. Tulsi plant has strong medicinal properties and circulates purified energy to all the parts of the home.
With space constraints, it has become very difficult now to have open spaces in the homes like in earlier times. One can still keep the centre of the home as an open space to move around. The kitchen should be on the south east direction.  Since south west is the most stable area of the house, one should try to build the master bedroom in this corner

North West is an ideal place for having guest room; one can even have drawing room on this side.  This is a relationship corner and helps in improving the relationships with others. This is also the corner of movements and therefore the guests don’t tend to overstay. One can even shift a daughter of marriageable age in the room built in the North West corner.

A client of mine was going through a lot of problems. His main concern was that his daughter was not getting married. She was already 40 years old and had become very head strong. The family was scared to even talk to her. The basic problem when I visited their home was that she was staying in the room placed at the south west corner. No doubt this made her very head strong. She was then asked to shift to the North West sector of the house. The first major change that the shifting brought in her life was that she picked up a job, and then her relationship with her family improved. She was also asked to follow certain astrological remedies and within six months of her shifting, she got married.

Study room and temple should be located in the North East. Kid’s room can be on the West. Bathrooms and toilets should be ideally built on the south and west.

The entire residential building should be made vaastu friendly. If you want to buy a flat, try to find out if the entire premises is built on a rectangular or a square area. If so, it would be the first positive sign. The east, north and the north east of the premises should have more open space. The buildings on the southwest of the premises should be taller than other buildings of the area. The main road should run on the east or the north or the north east of the premises and the main gate of the premises should also fall on these areas.

The park should be located in the centre of the premises with buildings all around it. The main electrical unit of the house should be located on its south eastern sector.
  The underground water supply should be located in the north east sector of the premises. A tall elevated building/ structure in front of the main gate of the premises should be avoided.

A huge place of worship near the premises can absorb all the positive energy floating around the house and should be avoided at all costs.

Similarly a hospital in the nearby area also absorbs a lot of positive energy and exudes a lot of negative energy. In order to have enough positive energy floating in the premise, you should try to build your house a little away from these areas.

The fundamentals of vaastu are the same for all types of buildings, whether they are residential buildings, shopping malls, or corporate houses. The basic vaastu can then be further diversified and customized according to a particular building.

Vaastu in a house is also applied according to the astrological chart of the owner of the house and the effects of vaastu can be further enhanced by combining it with the use of pyramids (which have very high energy levels), yantras (which are very powerful), mantras (they help in purifying and energizing the aura of the house), colors, mirrors and feng shui etc. The latter measures are used when the building has already been made and no further restructuring can be done.

Vaastu is not a superstition.  The principles of Vaastu are very scientific and the people who apply them sincerely enjoy health, wealth, peace and prosperity.
