West Delhi

The workforce of Delhi emerges from here. The locality sets out at the crack of dawn to win the daily bread for their families. Some of them traveling as far as Gurgoan and Noida (the places as far as 30 Km where most of the multinational companies have established their offices).

West Delhi is far removed from rest of Delhi. But this is where the world lands in the walled city of Delhi: Indira Gandhi International Airport. The airport was earlier known as Palam Airport, but got a new name with the inauguration of a new international building (Terminal 2) in 1996.On the south-east of Airport is Delhi Cntonment area (popularly referred to as ‘Delhi Cantt'). It houses the Headquarters, Delhi Area, the Army Golf Course, the Defence Services Officers Institute, Military housing, Army Public School, Army Hospital, Research and Referral, a tertiary care medical center of the armed forces of India and various other defence related installations.Janakpuri, one of the best middle class residential colonies, boasts of multiplexes, multi-storeyed shopping cum office complexes, restaurants, book shops, gift stores, brand outlets, courts, Transport Authority, Telephone Exchange. It is undoubtedly the commercial hub of West Delhi.Janakpuri has set a rare example by allowing three different religious centres (a Temple, a Gurdwara and a Church) to stand peacefully next to each other. It has set a true representation of a secular country that is India.

Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Sanatan Dharma Vidyalaya is one of the big educational establishments of India. A lengendry in its own, this institution specializes in imparting Indian culture, history, tradtions and customs and all-round development of students in all fields.

Further east, Karol Bagh, established as a settlement for Punjabis displaced during partition, is now a thriving commercial and business centre. The four streets - Ajmal Khan Road, Arya Samaj Road, Bank Street and Ghaffar Market - together provide the best possible bargain on a range of products from inexpensive readymades, cotton yarn and embroidered garments to big international labels and all kinds Indian munchies and masalas to second hand books to gold jewellery watches, sunglasses, calculators, eclectronic diares to hairdryers.
